Nicotine Pouch Strengths: A Basic Guide

Nicotine Pouch Strengths: A Basic Guide

Even just couple extra milligrams (mg) of nicotine can make a significant difference in terms of the desired/undesired effects of a nicotine pouch. A pleasurable experience can soon turn into sickness or symptoms of nausea, if an incorrect nicotine content is consumed. As such, we have provided this article to understand the measures of nicotine pouch strength.

Nicotine pouch strengths are usually stated in mg/gram (mg/g) or mg/pouch and can help you determine how strong a nicotine pouch is. Below we have detailed what this exactly means:

  • Mg/g - This means milligrams of nicotine per gram, e.g 30mg/g would equate to 30 milligrams of nicotine per gram measurement of the nicotine pouch. This may not necessarily mean there is 30mg of nicotine in the pouch you take.
  • Mg/pouch - Mg/pouch refers to milligrams of nicotine per pouch. e.g 30mg/pouch means that there is 30 milligrams of nicotine in the nicotine pouch you are about to consume.

Nicotine Pouch Strength Labels

Most nicotine pouches will feature nicotine mg/g or mg/pouch values on the packaging however, there is often a visual, text, or numerical indicator of strength called the strength label.

  • Visual Strength Labels - These are usually in the form of a series of dots. What does this mean? Essentially, the more dots filled means a higher nicotine strength, and vice versa. E.g, a brand offering products that are light, normal, strong, and extra strong, ranging from 4-50mg/pouch, 1 dot would mean ‘light' or 4mg/pouch and 4 dots would mean 'extra-strong' or 50mg/pouch.
  • Text / Numerical Strength Labels - Some nicotine pouch brands do not offer a visual indicator of strength. Instead they may use text, like ‘strong’, or ‘extra strong’. Numbers are also sometimes used, usually ‘1,2,3,4’ etc. E.g, 4 equals ‘strong’ and 5 equals ‘extra strong’.

Common Misconceptions

Different brands use different nicotine strength labels and sometimes, there is a distinct difference between nicotine mg/g and mg/pouch values.

Nicotine Pouch Strength Label Differences

The only time that interpreting the strength label can get slightly confusing is when you use different nicotine pouch brands.

Brands dose products along their strength spectrum with different mg’s of nicotine. If two brands have a dosage rating as ‘normal’ at 6mg and ‘strong’ at 15mg/pouch, and the other brand has a dosage as ‘normal’ at 10mg and ‘strong’ at 25mg/pouch, it does not mean the same for both brands!
-
This is why it is important to always check mg/g or mg/pouch values, to know exactly how much nicotine you will consume.

Mg/g and Mg/Pouch Differences
Although milligrams per gram / per pouch are recognised ways to knowing how much nicotine you will consume, the differences between the two types of values can be confusing.
For example, you may see a nicotine pouch that is stated to be 20mg/g however, the reality is that the nicotine pouch probably has a nicotine content of only 10mg/pouch.
-
Why is this? Well because most nicotine pouches weigh less than a gram and therefore contain less nicotine than the mg/g value. You can calculate the mg/pouch with this simple calculation:
-

Mg/g x Pouch Weight = Mg/pouch

Example:
100mg/g x 0.5g (Pouch Weight) = 50mg/pouch

You can also calculate the weight of a single pouch like this:

Nicotine Pouch Total Weight in Grams / No. of Pouches in Can = Pouch Weight in Grams

Final Thoughts

You should now know everything that there is about nicotine pouch strengths, remember to always check the mg/g and mg/pouch values to be extra sure and always proceed consumption with caution.
